Biodiversity Net Gain

Helping you reach a 10% increase in biodiversity for your project.

Biodiversity Net Gain

In the UK, a biodiversity net gain (BNG) refers to a principle and approach used to ensure that development projects lead to an overall improvement in the state of biodiversity. The concept is to leave the natural environment in a better condition than it was before development occurred. This involves creating, enhancing, or maintaining habitats and ecosystems to counterbalance any adverse impacts caused by construction or land use changes.

The UK government has incorporated biodiversity net gain into planning and development policies, with a legal requirement for most developments to achieve a 10% biodiversity net gain. This requirement is part of the Environment Act 2021, which mandates that developments should not only mitigate their impacts on the environment but also contribute positively to biodiversity.

The goal of BNG is to address biodiversity loss, restore ecosystems, and enhance natural habitats, helping to support a more resilient and diverse natural environment. This approach also supports broader environmental goals such as combating climate change and improving ecological health.

A biodiversity net gain (BNG) report outlines how a development project will positively impact biodiversity by comparing pre-development conditions with projected outcomes after enhancements. It includes a description of the site, current biodiversity, and the methods used for assessment. The report details potential impacts of the project, proposed mitigation and enhancement measures, and how these contribute to a net gain in biodiversity. It also includes a monitoring plan to track the effectiveness of these measures and a summary of consultations with stakeholders. The final report demonstrates how the project will leave the natural environment in a better state than before, ensuring compliance with legal and environmental standards.
